Nova Scotia’s sport community has much to be proud of.
The intent is to recognize the highest athletic achievements, as well as, contributions to karate of the individuals in this province (athletes, coaches, officials, volunteers, supporters). The award categories, criteria and nomination forms are available below.
KNS takes pride in recognizing the achievements and the valuable contributions of so many.
The Awards Committee recognizes the KNS Team as the best forum for pursuing and exploring athletic potential however, non-team members should not be disqualified from consideration for these awards.

AWARD CATEGORIES
Nominations for these awards can be made by any member of the KNS:
- KNS Volunteer of the Year – This award is presented annually to the individual who has dedicated his or her time to the betterment of our karate association. Those eligible for this award are sponsors, coaches, senseis, executive/board members, officials, minor officials, or adults in any other capacity who have been strong supporters of karate.
- Dojo Sensei of the Year – This award is present annually to a dojo sensei or coach who shows respect for officials, opponents and parents while demonstrating concern for all round development of their dojo members/athletes. Nomination is also based on merits of enthusiasm, leadership and positive impact on karate and its development.
- Club of the Year – This award is present annually to the club that shows the most support, spirit and attendance at KNS sponsored events.
- Club Contributors of the Year – This award is present annually as a means to recognize an individual in each club for their contribution to their club. Criteria are set by each club and nominees are submitted to the awards committee. One nominee per club.
- Michael S. Delaney Builders Award – This award may be awarded annually if a nominee exists, and can only be awarded to the same individual once. This award goes to Builder who may be sensei, coach, trainer, official, administrator, volunteer, or facility/program developer that has contributed to the strength of karate in Nova Scotia. They have inspired people, established a program, mentored a team/dojo or an individual to extraordinary accomplishment, or set an example for many to carry in their hearts. The merits of the nominee do not have to be limited to the current eligibility time frame, an exception may be made for an outstanding person who has made a significant contribution over an extended number of years to the benefit of karate in Nova Scotia.
- KNS Junior Sportsmanship Award – This award is present annually to the junior athlete (male or female) that has demonstrated fairness, courtesy, good temper and respect towards athletes, coaches, senseis, officials and parents. The athlete is to be nominated and selected by the HPC, Officials Committee and Executive/Board.
- KNS Senior Sportsmanship Award – KNS Senior Sportsmanship Award – This award is present annually to the senior athlete (male or female) that has demonstrated fairness, courtesy, good temper and respect towards athletes, coaches, senseis, officials and parents. The athlete is to be nominated and selected by the HPC, Officials Committee and Executive/Board.
Nominations for these awards are a result of committee/executive/team/officials submissions:
- KNS Rookie of the Year – This award is presented annual to a first year athlete (male or female) of the NS Karate team, as determined by coaching staff, based on performance, spirit and dedication.
- KNS Official of the Year – This award is presented annually to a Nova Scotia official. This individual demonstrates dedication to leadership, contributions to local karate sport development, and is seen as an advocate for fair play and ethical behaviour in the sport. They strive to better the quality of officiating within the Province with continued training and upgrading of their skills.
Nominations for these awards are a result of accumulation of event points:
- KNS Senior Female Kumite Athlete of the Year – This award is presented annually to the senior outstanding female athlete. This individual possesses the qualities associated with performance excellence and sport achievement. The successful nominee is chosen as the top weighted points recipient for the senior kumite divisions in the Provincial and National tournaments identified below in the selection criteria.
- KNS Senior Female Kata Athlete of the Year – This award is presented annually to the senior outstanding female athlete. This individual possesses the qualities associated with performance excellence and sport achievement. The successful nominee is chosen as the top weighted points recipient for the senior kata divisions in the Provincial and National tournaments identified below in the selection criteria.
- KNS Senior Male Kumite Athlete of the Year – This award is presented annually to the senior outstanding male athlete. This individual possesses the qualities associated with performance excellence and sport achievement. The successful nominee is chosen as the top weighted points recipient for the senior kumite divisions (excludes 18-20 results) in the Provincial and National tournaments identified below in the selection criteria.
- KNS Senior Male Kata Athlete of the Year – This award is presented annually to the senior outstanding male athlete. This individual possesses the qualities associated with performance excellence and sport achievement. The successful nominee is chosen as the top weighted points recipient for the senior kata divisions in the Provincial and National tournaments identified below in the selection criteria.
- KNS Junior Female Kumite Athlete of the Year – This award is presented annually to the junior outstanding female athlete. This individual possesses the qualities associated with performance excellence and sport achievement. The successful nominee is chosen as the top weighted points recipient for the junior kumite divisions in the Provincial and National tournaments identified below in the selection criteria.

This individual possesses the qualities associated with performance excellence and sport achievement. The successful nominee is chosen as the top weighted points recipient for the junior kumite divisions in the Provincial and National tournaments identified below in the selection criteria.
- KNS Junior Male Kata Athlete of the Year – This award is presented annually to the junior outstanding male athlete. This individual possesses the qualities associated with performance excellence and sport achievement. The successful nominee is chosen as the top weighted points recipient for the junior kata divisions in the Provincial and National tournaments identified below in the selection criteria.
- KNS Bright Future / Up and Comer Female Athlete of the Year – This award is presented annually to an under 14 aged female athlete,leading in points, who is deemed to have a promising future ahead of them in karate based on their performance and contributions at KNS events during the eligibility period. The athlete is to be nominated and selected by the HPC, Officials Committee and Executive/Board.
- KNS Bright Future / Up and Comer Male Athlete of the Year – This award is presented annually to an under 14 aged male athlete, leading in points, who is deemed to have a promising future ahead of them in karate based on their performance and contributions at KNS events during the eligibility period. The athlete is to be nominated and selected by the HPC, Officials Committee and Executive/Board.
Additional Selection Criteria:
· Athlete award recipients must be members in good standing of the KNS.
· Our year will be defined as the 12 month period ending on the last day of the month which the National Championships is held.
· An athlete aged 18 to 20 can compete in both Senior Divisions (21+ yrs) and Junior (14-20 yrs). Any points earned will only count for the applicable division not both. The exception is Kata Senior Division, where at Nationals the age is 16+ yrs, so for Male/Female kata 16+ are allowed to qualify for the Senior award as long as they competed in the Senior Kata division.
· Points for a particular division will only count if the division had results in at least 2 tournaments during the qualifying season. I.e. if a division only has enough competitors to be run at only one of the qualify tournaments, it is not deemed to be of value, to award points towards the awards for that specified performance.
· The Bright Future / Up and Comer Award is awarded to an athlete who competed in any under 14 years of age division.
· Selection to Nova Scotia Team will be worth 4 points for the division you are selected to represent (ie. 4 pts for Kata and/or Kumite).
· Provincial Qualifying Events – The events include the 3 Grand Prix (prior to Nationals), Atlantics (prior to Nationals).
o 4 points – Gold
o 3 points – Silver
o 2 points – Bronze (3rd place)
o 1 points – Bronze (4th place)
· National Qualify Event – Canadian National Championships.
o 15 points – Gold
o 13 points – Silver
o 11 points – Bronze
o 11 points – Bronze
· International Event – Any International event that takes place during the eligibility time period where the athlete competes as part of the Canadian National Team to represent Canada.
o 18 points – Gold
o 16 points – Silver
o 14 points – Bronze
o 14 points – Bronze
· In the event of tied point accumulations between 2 or more athletes in any award category, favour should be given to the athlete who wins the most matches at the National Championships. If a tie persists the final decision should rest with the high performance committee.
Recognition – KNS Awards Banquet
o All team awards to be awarded by members of the coaching staff.
o All other awards to be awarded by a member of the KNS Executive/Board or HPC.
o Nomination/award process may be adjusted as required, if it becomes impossible to commit to deadlines in order to have all awards prepared for the KNS banquet.
o The winners of the Sports Nova Scotia awards shall be recognized at the KNS Awards Banquet.
