Karate Nova Scotia will be hosting a Canada Games Selection at the November 12th Grand Prix tournament. This selection will be used to select athletes for the 2023 Winter Canada Games being held in Summerside, PEI from February 18th to 23rd, 2023. To be eligible for selection athletes must be a member of Karate Nova Scotia, a minimum of 16 years old and a maximum of 17 years old as of March 1, 2023. Their Date of birth is to be between March 2, 2005 – March 1, 2007.

Athletes competition for selection are encourages to have a coach (dojo coach or provincial coach) with them for the selection event.
The Canada Games Divisions are as follows:
- Female individual kata
- Male individual kata
- Female -53 kg individual kumite
- Female -59 kg individual kumite
- Female +59 kg individual kumite
- Male -61 kg individual kumite
- Male -68 individual kumite
- Male +68 individual kumite
Nova Scotia is allowed to send a maximum of 9 athletes total: 4 males, 4 females, 1 extra athlete (male or female). Our team is allowed a maximum of 5 athletes from the same gender and all registered athletes must intend to compete in at least one event.
Note: Each Province/Territory can enter one or two competitor(s) per event providing that the maximum size of a team is no larger than 9 athletes.
The selection criteria will be as follows:
Kumite:
Selection tournament
- If there is only 1 athlete then automatic selection
- 2 candidates – best 2 out of 3 (up to 3 matches)
- 3 or more candidates – round robin competition. WKF rules for tie breaker.
- Athletes to be within 2Kg of their weight division at selection tournament. Athletes will be weighed at the tournament. Failure to make weight will result in the athlete being disqualified.
Kata:
Selection tournament
- If there is only 1 athlete then automatic selection
- 2 kata’s to be performed per athlete with aggregate score to be winner
Please note that that coaching staff can postpone the final selection of a division if a potential selectee is injured or sick at the selection event.

The coaching staff will also be selecting alternates if available for each division. They will be included in all the team trainings and will be selected to compete at Canada Games in the event an athletes is injured or pulls out for whatever reason.
